it looks like straw is getting rid of 'slaps on the wrist' for violent thugs. he's ordered a review to ensure all assault cases get taken to court. don't get me wrong, it's a step in the right direction, but this really is too little too late. the justice system as a whole is just a mess, and there is just a culture of letting thugs get away with a ticking off to save paperwork. it'll take a lot more than a 'review' to sort out what is wrong with this country's crime rate.

It was a good show, well worth watching. I think it showed that the CPS aren't always to blame - especially when the police aren't even bothering to refer cases to them.

Gorgon Brown and his inept Ministers have made so many U-Turns that they must be premanantly in a state of giddiness. Maybe that explains some of their actions. IMO Jack Straw is amongst the worst of the lot. His performance on QT the other week showed him up for the incompetent idiot he is. Only an useless PM like Brown would consider having a man like Straw in his Cabinet.

I watched the Panorama programme and was disgusted that an extremely violent thug who beat up that young woman so viciously received only a caution, it really beggars belief! Of course, it would've been a different outcome had he done it to a police officer.

I wonder why, perhaps he is now thinking that this u-turn will look good as there is a General election around the corner.

its all to do with not having enough prisons. funny how they can find a space for an oap who refuses to pay the council tax rises, for getting a worse service tho, eh i actually feel sorry for the gavvers, and that dont happen often, as it must be soul destroying having so many cases slung out. no wonder they dont bother even reporting em now, which does suit the govt, so is allowed CRIME IS FALLING, YOU'VE NEVER BEEN SAFER

Well, there's no secret as to why he's done the U-turn is there? Perhaps even he can now see the writing on the wall. Look at Labour's record of dealing with crime? No problem, just alter the sentencing guidelines, give the police so much paperwork that they'll be happy to caution and fine instead of charging to ensure some sort of justice is done IN COURT, turn over charging in all but the minor cases to the CPS...the list goes on... massage and mask...well done New Labour. You seem to care more about offenders than victims. There will be - thank the Lord - a general election next year. But consider, can you really trust a man who can't pay his council tax correctly and hold the position he did at the same time? And for that matter what about one of his colleagues who clearly thinks she's above the law to drive on after an accident? Will there be a prosecution I wonder, like there was(n't) wth Prescott and the egg-thrower.......jobs for the boys (and girls ) of course.

It's taken ZaNu Liarbore twelve years to totally screw up the country, I guess this new 'get tough' scheme is because elections are looming, do they really think we will forget what they have done to the country?
